Burn Survivors Support Group
Tropical Storm Erika Update
Jackson Health System is open for business and operating as usual.
The University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Burn Center wants to give burn survivors the strength, support and understanding to engage the start of their new lives as survivors by offering a biweekly support group for those 18 years and older.
This support group is a place where burn survivors can socialize and discuss issues of interest, as well as express concerns or issues they may be facing related to their injuries. Useful topics are discussed each month and guest speakers are invited to aid in the understanding of the various stages of burn injury, rehabilitation and recovery. The setting is casual and we encourage a fun atmosphere that is welcoming to all who attend. Our burn survivors, as well as Mary Ishii, Psy.D facilitate the meetings.
Dr. Ishii has been working with burn survivors for more than 10 years and has worked with amputees and other traumatic injury survivors for over 15 years. In addition to burns, amputation, and other traumatic injuries, she also specializes in behavioral pain management and hypnosis. “Our Burn Survivor Support Group helps survivors recognize that they are not alone in their recovery process. We have many survivors from different stages of the recovery process, from newly burned inpatients, to survivors who were burned several years ago. Unless you’ve been burned yourself, you don’t know what a survivor is going through – other burn survivors do.”
The Burn Survivor Support group generally meets the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month from 12 noon – 1pm. It’s free of charge to any burn survivor.
To confirm the date and time of the next meeting or to be added to the email list, please contact Mary Ishii, Psy.D at MIshii@med.miami.edu or 305-585-1428.
