The Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry Fellowship Program at University of Miami Miller School of Medicine/Jackson Memorial Hospital offers two positions for this ACGME-accredited one-year fellowship. Under the direction of Dr. Vanessa Padilla, a board-certified consultation-liaison psychiatrist and a member of the Academy of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry, the fellows are expected to rotate primarily at Jackson Memorial Hospital, a tertiary public teaching hospital.

The fellows are offered specialized consultation and liaison activities to provide care in the critical care setting, inpatient medical, obstetrical and surgical wards, rehabilitation units, and also at the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital. The fellows will also have an opportunity to work in psycho-oncology and/or HIV specialty ambulatory care settings. Areas of specialized training include psycho-oncology, HIV, transplant psychiatry, cardiovascular medicine, and perinatal psychiatry.

Each fellow sees an average of fifteen new cases and up to ten follow-up encounters per week. Fellows are offered didactic, clinical, and research supervision by the Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry faculty for an average of three hours per week. In addition, an average of ten hours per week are devoted to didactic activities through attending rounds, case vignette discussions, board preparation review, and conferences. Each fellow has the opportunity to participate in the teaching of residents and medical students. Fellows has access to updated online journals and opportunity to attend annual psychiatry meetings. An academic research project is encouraged to be completed by each fellow under the supervision of faculty members.

As per ACGME requirements, all applicants must have satisfactorily completed an ACGME-accredited psychiatry residency prior to entering the program.

In addition, the following documents are required:

  • Application for graduate medical education at JMH (general application)
  • Personal Statement
  • Transcript of medical school scholastic record
  • Documentation of graduation from medical school
  • Copy of state licenses
  • 3 letters of recommendation, one must be from training director of general psychiatry residency program
  • USMLE exam scores, Steps 1, 2 and 3 must be completed.
  • Valid ECFMG Certificate (Foreign or International Graduates)
  • Visa Status

By means of individual supervision, small group seminars, Grand Rounds, didactic lectures, case conferences as well as scholarly and research participation related to clinical material and basic sciences, we provide a comprehensive training program for Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry.

Board Exam Requirements
Certified Diplomat of American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in General Psychiatry as well as completion of a 1 year ACGME accredited Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry Training Program 

Educational & Other Experience
The educational purpose of the training program is to develop in the fellow expertise in the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of patients with complex medical and psychiatric comorbidities. Areas of subspecialty expertise training include the evaluation and treatment of: (1) transplant patients with end stage organ disease, (2) cancer patients, (3) pregnant and post-partum patients with complex psychiatric symptomatology, (4) intensive care unit patients with psychiatric syndromes in the setting of severe medical illness, and (5) general hospital consultation patients admitted into medical and surgical wards in need of expert psychiatric consultation. The goals of the training program are to impart upon the trainee the knowledge and expertise to care for complex medically-ill patients with psychiatric syndromes and to develop a research project for publication and presentation at a national meeting

Research
Research project is developed with the assistance of the teaching faculty and monthly research meetings are held to monitor the progress of the fellow’s identified research project.  The expectation is that, with mentorship from the teaching faculty, the fellow will be able to complete a research project to present at a national meeting or to submit for publication.

Call
Fellows are not required to be on-call during the course of their fellowship.
