Jackson Health System/Jackson Memorial Hospital through the University of Miami Division of Vascular Surgery offers an ACGME/RRC accredited fellowship in Vascular and Endovascular Surgery. The program was established to train individuals who have successfully completed a general surgery residency to become qualified vascular surgeons in the private or academic sector.  The fellows divide their time between The Miami Veterans Medical Center, The University of Miami Hospital, Jackson Memorial Hospital, and the Ryder Trauma Center.

The operative cases will incorporate a wide breadth of both open and endovascular procedures. During this time, the fellow will also spend time in the noninvasive vascular laboratory learning how to perform, and interpret exams. It is expected that the fellow will gain the proficiency an experience to take the Registered Physicians Vascular Interpretation (RPVI) examination at the end of the first year.

During the two-year fellowship, the vascular surgery fellow will be exposed to the entire spectrum of arterial and venous disease, including non-operative care, vascular medicine, as well as open surgical and endovascular therapy.

Fellows will become proficient in preoperative evaluation, therapeutic planning, performing endovascular/open vascular interventions and patient immediate and long-term follow up.

Fellows divide their time and rotate between the Miami Veterans Medical Center, University of Miami Hospital, and Jackson Memorial Hospital. These institutions are located within one block of each other. Rotating at a tertiary care center offers exposure to a wide spectrum of open vascular and endovascular cases, including cerebrovascular, aortoiliac and infrainguinal occlusive disease, thoracic and abdominal aortic aneurysms, visceral arterial disease, arteriovenous access and venous interventions. The vascular service also supports the busy Level 1 Ryder Trauma Center, exposing the fellow to a variety of traumatic vascular interventions including a large number of traumatic aortic injuries.

At the University of Miami Hospital, Jackson Memorial Hospital and Miami Veterans Medical Center, the rotating fellow will work with a team of junior general surgery residents and medical students to oversee patient care. The rotating vascular surgery fellow will attend a weekly outpatient clinic and participate in the pre-operative and post-operative care of vascular surgery patients under the supervision of the vascular surgery faculty.

Graded responsibility will be given to the vascular surgery fellow as he/she demonstrates competence in surgical procedures, pre and post-operative patient care and advances during the second year to independent practice.

The program emphasizes the importance of research in vascular surgery and advances the fellow’s academic career. It is expected that the fellow present and/or publish one research project per year of training.
