Tests, Treatments & Procedures

When children require a liver or intestinal transplant or more routine abdominal surgery, pediatric gastroenterologists work closely with pediatric surgeons to ensure that patients receive the best possible care.

  • Colonoscopy
A colonoscopy allows a doctor to look into the large intestine with a narrow, flexible tune that has a camera on the end to determine why children have diarrhea, intestinal bleeding, weight loss and other conditions.
  • Liver Biopsy
A liver biopsy is a procedure performed using a special needle to obtain a sample of the liver. Liver biopsies help physicians evaluate jaundice, liver inflammation or an englarged liver.
  • pH Probe Study
Oftentimes, when acid reflux is suspected, a doctor will measure the pH of the esophagus to determine whether acid is refluxing up from the stomach into the esophagus. The procedure is also performed to determine the effectiveness of anti-reflux treatment and to offer an explanation for conditions such as nighttime cough and hoarseness. The procedure includes inserting a thin, plastic tube mounted with a sensor through the nostril and into the esophagus. A chest x-ray assesses the position of the tube, connected to a recorder and the probe remains in place for the 24-hour study. The child may return home for the study or remain in the hospital.
  • Upper Endoscopy
An upper endoscopy is a procedure to determine why children have abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting or poor growth. A small, narrow tube mounted with a light and camera is inserted into the swallowing tube of a child to evaluate the tube, stomach and upper small intestine.

Advanced Intestinal Rehabilitation Program

Holtz Children's Hospital has one of the few multidisciplinary Intestinal Rehabilitation Programs in the United States. The program cares for children with intestinal failure, generally caused by short bowel syndrome. Short bowel syndrome is a complex and often devastating disorder caused by the loss of part of the small bowel and the decreased ability of the intestine to absorb nutrition. The loss of bowel can be due to congenital diseases or surgical removal.

Treatment
Treatment consists primarily of specialized nutrition management aimed at helping the remaining intestines adapt and take on the absorption functions that were lost. Most of these patients depend on parental nutrition. Before the creation of this program, the only option for these patients was intestinal/liver transplant. With the new program, transplant is an option for patients who fail home parental nutrition therapy.

Colorectal Health

In the United States, colorectal cancer is the third most-commonly diagnosed type of cancer for both men and women. Colorectal cancer is also one of the most preventable types of cancer because regular colonoscopies starting at age 50 (or earlier if you are at higher risk) can detect pre-cancerous polyps before they turn into cancer. In addition, because colorectal cancer tends to progress slowly, it can often be treated effectively when caught early.

Our team provides screening services including colonoscopy, and they treat patients suffering from early-stage to advanced colorectal cancer. Our surgeons use sophisticated, minimally invasive surgical techniques to diagnose, treat, and manage colorectal cancer.

Minimally Invasive Surgery

The Colorectal and Minimally Invasive Surgery Specialists use advanced technology to minimize pain, shorten recovery time, and reduce scarring. New equipment and new techniques allow our surgeons to perform complex procedures through tiny incisions (or sometimes with no incision at all). These minimally invasive procedures are associated with decreased complications and shorter hospital stays. Our innovative, leading-edge procedures are some of the most advanced in the nation – in fact, we’re an epicenter for training and one of only 10 centers in the country to specialize in robotic and colorectal surgery.

The Jackson South colorectal program has the distinction of being named a Colorectal Epicenter, one of five in the United States, as designated by Intuitive Surgical, the creators of the da Vinci® Surgical System. We not only treat patients, but also teach other physicians how to use the robot in surgical applications.

For diagnosis and treatment of cancers of the colon, rectum, and small bowel, the following procedures are performed at Jackson South:

Staging laparoscopy: These procedures are performed to determine the extent of the cancer, or to "stage" the cancer. Information gathered from this examination helps physicians create the best treatment plan.
Transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEM): a minimally invasive technique in which certain early or superficial rectal tumors can be removed through the anus
Segmental colectomy/left or right colectomy: removal of a portion of the colon
Abdominal perineal resection: removal of the anus, rectum and sigmoid colon, and creation of a permanent colostomy
Total abdominal colectomy: removal of the entire colon
Total proctocolectomy: removal of the colon, rectum and anus
Small bowel resection: removal of part of the small intestine
Stoma creation for fecal diversion: This surgery creates an opening in the abdomen for stool to pass through.
