Jackson North Medical Center

An ASMBS Bariatric Center of Excellence®

Currently, one in three adults in the United States is overweight. When diet and exercise don't help people shed the excess weight, many in South Florida turn to the Weight-Loss Surgery Center at Jackson North Medical Center for help.

The program has a holistic approach that provides patients with psychological counseling before and after the surgery, personalized nutrition and fitness plans as well as vitamin supplements. We understand that weight-loss surgery is a life-changing step. Our caring, compassionate team includes trained surgeons as well as staff members who guide people through the process and help ensure their needs are met.

Gastric bypass procedures are done through a laparoscope, thus improving recovery time and leaving much smaller scars. The surgery takes approximately one to two hours and some patients are able to return to work in approximately two weeks. Our staff works with each patient to create their own individualized strategy to achieve their weight-loss goals.

Special Services

Surgery can provide long term and sustained weight loss. After bariatric surgery, patients usually lose about one-half to two-thirds of their excess body weight, which is about one-third of their current weight.

"Vertical Solutions" are the procedures, such as the vertical gastric sleeve, endoscopic gastroplasty and gastric bypass, that eliminate hunger urges resulting in long-term weight loss.

Our physicians specialize in:

  • Adjustable Gastric Band
  • Gastric Bypass
  • Laparoscopic Greater Curvature Plication (LGCP)
  • Vertical Gastric Sleeve

Physician Team

The surgical group is led by Medical Directors Moises Jacobs, M.D., FACS and Gustavo Plasencia, M.D., FACS, FASCRS, and includes Eddie Gomez, M.D., FACS, Rene F. Hartmann, M.D., Henry J. Lujan, M.D., FACS, FASCRS, Roderick Romero, M.D., and Manuel Viamonte III, M.D., FACS, FASCRS.

In 1990, the surgeons began performing advanced laparoscopic procedures. They were the first in Miami to perform various types of bariatric procedures, including laparoscopic gastric bypass in 1996, placement of laparoscopic bands in 2000, and, since 2005, have performed and modified the technique of the Vertical Gastric Sleeves.

Also in 1990, the surgeons pioneered laparoscopic colostomies, a procedure where part of the colon is removed, and have since advanced and championed this procedure around the world.

Additionally, the group pioneered the use of biologic mesh for the repair of hiatal hernias to treat severe acid reflux disease in 2000. The surgeons were also one of the first to use microlaparoscopy, a new surgery technique utilizing tiny instruments measuring two or three millimeters in size.

Together, the surgical group has written two books, many articles and book chapters; taught thousands of surgeons; and patented instruments for use in laparoscopic surgery. Throughout their careers, they have taught and operated in countries throughout Asia, Europe, the Middle East, South and Central America and even as far away as New Zealand. They have been made honorary members of many surgical societies around the world.
