Emergency Medicine Residency Program Launches at Jackson Memorial Hospital

This month, 15 young physicians from all over the United States, Canada and Australia took their first steps in training for their careers in emergency medicine as part of the inaugural Emergency Medicine Residency Program at Jackson Memorial Hospital – the first hospital in South Florida to offer this opportunity.
Program leadership includes Bobby Kapur MD, MPH, Jackson Memorial’s chief of Emergency Medicine and renowned emergency medicine expert, and Amado Alejandro Baez, MD, MSc, MPH, FAAEM, FCCM, residency director and an expert in pre-hospital/ disaster medicine, critical care, and public health.

“The residents will be offered first-class observation, leadership training, and innovation,” Dr. Baez said. “It is a three-year program, with fourth-year fellowship opportunities in areas like critical care and disaster planning.”

In addition to the residents working in the country’s seventh busiest emergency room at Jackson Memorial, they will have rotations at University of Miami Hospital and Holy Cross Hospital in Ft. Lauderdale. The program is also accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

“Jackson Memorial Hospital is the ideal place for future generations of emergency medicine physicians to learn – and learn from the best,” said Carlos A. Migoya, president and CEO of Jackson Health System. “The experience these young doctors will gain from this program will prepare them to be leaders in their field.”

Jackson began recruiting for the program last October during the annual American College of Emergency Physicians Emergency Medicine Residency Fair in Boston. The idea was to bring together a strong diverse inaugural group that would set the tone for subsequent classes and further emergency medicine in South Florida.
