Jackson Emergency Medicine Develops Global Scholars Program with the U.S. Department of State
Senior physicians from the U.S. Department of State (DOS) visited the Jackson Memorial Hospital Department of Emergency Medicine on Monday, June 27, to launch a new Global Scholars Mini-Fellowship Program.
The Deputy Medical Director of the Bureau of Medical Services, and the Regional Medical Manager for the Western Hemisphere toured Jackson Memorial facilities as they learned about the program which provides physicians training opportunities in modern aspects of emergency medicine clinical care, academics, and operations.
Program leadership includes Jackson Memorial Hospital Chief of Emergency Medicine Bobby Kapur MD, MPH, a renowned International EM expert, and Global Scholars Director Amado Alejandro Baez, MD, MSc, MPH, FAAEM, FCCM, an expert in pre-hospital/disaster medicine, critical care and public health.
“By having the DOS sponsor training for international physicians who work with our Department of State facilities in Latin America, highlights the high quality and cutting-edge emergency care provided by the Jackson Memorial emergency department,” said Dr. Kapur. “This is an exciting opportunity for Emergency Medicine at Jackson Memorial Hospital to collaborate with DOS on Global Health Diplomacy.”
This unique collaboration was in the works for a while when Dr. Baez served as a DOS post-medical advisor since 2011.
“I witnessed first-hand the incredible commitment of the U.S. embassy medical staff which provided the best and highest quality medical care to members of the diplomatic mission and U.S. expats,” said Dr. Baez. “Clearly this can be challenging when dealing with sometimes less than optimal resources intrinsic to the native health system of developing countries. We purposely developed this collaborative effort between DOS MED and Jackson Memorial Hospital as an opportunity to strengthen local capacity and better the care rendered to U.S. citizens overseas.”
Jackson Emergency Department faculty has important global health and international medicine experience, having already worked on projects in countries across the globe, including the Dominican Republic, Panama, Peru, Chile, Colombia, El Salvador, Haiti, Argentina, Spain, Turkey, India, and China.
