Men’s Health: Healthy Foundations For Peak Performance

Men’s Health: Healthy Foundations For Peak Performance

Men tend to reach their physical peak in their 20s; however, staying healthy also means knowing the most common health risks. It is also very important that you don’t skip going to the doctor for regular medical screenings and checkups. Health checkups are important at every stage of your life.

Tell your health care provider about any family history of medical risks. Also, speak to your primary care physician about steps to prevent injuries and optimize your mental health. Keeping your body and mind at peak performance can help you stay healthier longer.

This is also a great time to set healthy habits for lifestyle choices including your diet and exercise, the rewards of which can pay off for years to come.

    • Blood pressure check (normal is 120/80)

If Needed

  • Skin check
If you notice any changes in skin marks or moles, including changes in size, shape, or color, talk to your primary care doctor or a dermatologist.

HEALTH RISKS TO BE AWARE OF

  • Testicular Cancer
This is the most common type of cancer in younger men, and can be detected earlier with regular self-examinations.
  • Melanoma
Sunlight, the main source of UV rays, is a major risk factor for melanoma and other skin cancers. Some research suggests that having many sunburns, especially in childhood, increases the risk of getting melanoma. If you are spending time outside, make sure to apply sunscreen regularly.
  • High Blood Pressure
High blood pressure is defined as 140/90 mm Hg or higher. Know your blood pressure and remember to check it regularly. Doing so can save your life.
  • High Cholesterol
There are many ways you can control your cholesterol. Cut back on saturated fats, increase your servings of foods like fish and whole grains, and take part in regular physical activity.

Take time to talk with your healthcare provider to make sure you are up-to-date on recommended health screenings and vaccines.
