One of the cornerstones of Jackson’s storied history is its longstanding commitment to serving the people of Miami-Dade County. We are building upon that rich legacy by expanding our services closer to where more people live and work. Jackson Health System purchased land in Doral to build a new campus there – called Jackson West Medical Center – to house an adult and pediatric emergency room, a diagnostic center, and outpatient clinics. The site could also support an inpatient hospital with 100 beds. Jackson West, located just west of the Palmetto Expressway and on the north side of Northwest 25th Street, will be custom-tailored to meet the unique communities growing in Doral, Miami Springs, Sweetwater, West Miami, and Virginia Gardens – just as our other facilities meet the needs of the communities they serve.
Construction is expected to begin in 2017 on the emergency department, diagnostic center, outpatient clinics, and parking.
As part of Jackson’s innovative Mentor/Protégé Development Program, contractor WG Yates and Sons Construction is leading this project as a mentor, working alongside small business protégés, LEGO Construction Company, and Lunacon Construction Group.
100-Bed Hospital At Jackson West to be Named José Milton Memorial Hospital
The Jackson West campus is designed to accommodate a 100-bed, acute care hospital to be named José Milton Memorial Hospital. The José Milton Foundation made a $10 million gift to the Jackson Health Foundation, the fundraising arm of Jackson Health System. In October 2016, community leaders, elected officials, and philanthropists gathered at the site of the future hospital for a ceremonial groundbreaking.
Other elements of the 275,000-square-foot Jackson West facility will include a primary and specialty children’s clinic, an adult specialty clinic, imaging/diagnostics, an emergency department and a children’s ambulatory pavilion. The campus will provide immediate access to medical care to more than 585,000 residents who live within five miles. One of Miami-Dade County’s most medically underserved areas will finally have easy access to Jackson’s unmatched medical care.
We look forward to working with our new neighbors and making Jackson West their healthcare provider of choice.
The History of Jackson West
In March 2015, the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners unanimously supported Jackson Health System’s plan to purchase 27 acres in the City of Doral. The plans were also approved by the Public Health Trust Board of Trustees, Jackson’s governing body, and the Jackson Bond Citizens’ Advisory Committee, which reviews all projects funded by the Jackson Miracle-Building Bond Program.
Jackson negotiated a price of $38.5 million, below the average appraised value. Jackson is allocating $15 million of that amount from its own operational funds, a result of sound fiscal planning and leadership. Other elements of the project will be funded through the Jackson Miracle-Building Bond program.
