The Jackson Health System/Jackson Memorial Hospital Hand Fellowship, in affiliation with the University Of Miami Miller School Of Medicine, offers two positions available to board-eligible general surgeons, plastic surgeons and orthopedic surgeons who wish additional training in the evaluation and management of upper extremity conditions. Trainees benefit from our in-depth experience in the full breath of hand surgery, from the common to the complex. In addition to a busy clinical service, fellows will benefit from a comprehensive teaching curriculum, mentorship, and research opportunities. Both positions are a one-year training program, running from August 1through July 31 each year.

The University of Miami – Division of Orthopaedics Hand Surgery Fellowship has full accreditation. Applications for the Hand Surgery Fellowship are due on January 31, although applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.

Teaching Hospitals

  • Jackson Memorial Hospital
    With 1,550 beds and serving as the county hospital for Miami and Dade County, Jackson Memorial Hospital is utilized as the main teaching hospital. It is part of the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center Complex, a modern 67-acre campus located minutes from downtown Miami. The average daily orthopaedic inpatient census is 61 and annual orthopaedic outpatient clinic visits total over 26,500. There is an average of 10,100 operative procedures performed annually by the orthopaedic department.
  • Veterans Administration Hospital
    Located across the street from Jackson Memorial Hospital,the Veterans Administration Hospital is a 651 bed hospital with an additional 240 beds in the nursing home. Annual orthopaedic outpatient clinic visits total over 4,800, with more than 460 orthopaedic operative procedures performed last year.
  • Nicklaus Children’s Hospital
    Nicklaus Children’s Hospital,formerly Miami Children’s Hospital, operates South Florida’s only licensed specialty hospital exclusively for children, with more than 650 attending physicians and over 130 pediatric sub-specialists. The 289-bed nonprofit hospital is renowned for excellence in all aspects of pediatric medicine.
  • University of Miami Hospital
    University of Miami Hospital (UMH) is a 500 bed facility located across the street from  the School of Medicine and JMH. More than 817 orthopaedic operative procedures were performed at UMH last year.
  • Bascom Palmer Eye Institute
    The ambulatory surgical center located in the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute allows for  exposure to elective hand in a busy ambulatory setting. Additionally, private University of Miami patients are seen at the Orthopaedic Center located at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. Hand surgery faculty and fellow offices are located in the lower level of this facility.

    • These didactic lectures have been carefully structured to cover the entire spectrum of hand surgery in a series of weekly conferences. These conferences are the joint responsibility of the fellows and faculty on the hand surgery service.

On-call Requirements
Call is taken from home and each fellow takes on average 6 days of call per month. Primary call at Jackson Memorial Hospital is taken by the University of Miami Orthopaedic Surgery Residents with the fellows available for operative consults. Fellows are also responsible for primary call approximately 3 of those 6 days at the VA and University of Miami Hospitals.

Each fellow is expected to participate in research during the year culminating any either a presentation at a national meeting or a publication in a peer-reviewed journal. Numerous opportunities are available to participate in research projects with Core faculty.
