  • Leukemia and lymphoma

  • Solid tumors
  • Bone marrow failure syndromes, such as aplastic anemia
  • Primary immunodeficiencies
  • Storage diseases

In addition, our multilingual staff includes a dedicated team of dietitians, child life specialists, social workers, psychologists, and pharmacists. All of our experts are trained to provide the specialized care pediatric stem cell transplant patients require and deserve.

Awards and Recognition

The Holtz Children’s Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant Program, in affiliation with the University Of Miami Miller School Of Medicine, has been awarded a three-year accreditation by the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT), a national accreditation program. The program at Holtz Children’s Hospital is the only continuously FACT- accredited pediatric stem cell transplant program in South Florida. This accreditation opens the door for those children whose insurance companies require them to undergo treatment at FACT accredited institutions.

Thanks to the specialization and advancement of our program, the Holtz Children’s transplant team completed 26 transplant procedures in 2017. Of the 26, transplant procedures completed, 21 were allogeneic, while five were autologous. The focus of Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant Program remains fixed on improving outcomes, a percentage that has continued to improve over the past three years.

Facilities

Sylvester and Holtz Children’s have developed an integrated program that combines two state-of-the-art facilities: alex’s place, a 3,200 square foot pediatric hematology/oncology outpatient clinic at Sylvester’s Miami location and a brand new, seven-bed, self-contained blood and marrow transplant unit at Holtz Children’s. Prior to transplantation, patients receive care at alex’s place, in a space designed to empower patients and support their families. Then, they head a short distance across the medical campus to Holtz Children’s new unit for stem cell infusion and immediate post-transplant care – all in a family-centered environment.

alex’s Place

Before and after transplants at Holtz Children’s new inpatient unit, pediatric patients receive care including chemotherapy at alex’s place. Here, kids and their families can feel safe, comfortable, and empowered during treatment. The colorful, child-friendly environment helps patients and their families find a few moments of fun amid their otherwise challenging journey. The unique facility is attached to Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, but has its own look and feel, as well as special features to let kids be kids.
