The Pediatric Urology Program at Holtz Children’s Hospital has been recognized as one of the nation’s top 50 programs by U.S. News & World Report in its Best Children’s Hospitals rankings for 2011-12. Out of the roughly 5,000 U.S. hospitals, only about 1 in 30 has deep expertise in caring for children with serious problems. Of those few, 76 hospitals ranked among the nation’s top 50 in at least one of 10 specialties.

Specialized Services

At Holtz Children’s Hospital, pediatric urologists treat children and adolescents with disorders of the genital tract and urinary system, ranging from structural abnormalities that are present at birth (congenital) to problems acquired as the child grows, such as urinary tract infections. Working closely with their nephrology colleagues, pediatric urologists also treat kidney anomalies, obstructions and cancer with a variety of procedures including kidney transplantation.

Pediatric urologists at Holtz also participate in delicate surgeries used to correct or treat a fetal anomaly or condition while the baby is still in its mother’s womb. One of the common surgeries performed by the specialists in the Fetal Therapy Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Women’s Hospital Center is to repair urinary tract obstruction, which could lead to the abnormal development of a baby’s kidneys and lungs.
