THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH IN MIAMI-DADE COUNTY PARTNERS WITH JACKSON HEALTH SYSTEM TO CELEBRATE THE 125TH ANNIVERSARY OF PUBLIC HEALTH IN FLORIDA

The yellow fever epidemic that occurred in Florida during 1887-1888 brought to light the need for control of this and other diseases in Florida to prevent future epidemics. In response to this need, in February 20, 1889, the State Board of Health was created by the Florida Legislature with powers to inspect, quarantine and improve sanitary rules necessary to protect the health of the people.

The State Board of Health, now named the Florida Department of Health, has a presence in all Florida counties to protect, promote, and improve the health of all people in Florida.

In May 1896, Dr. James M. Jackson was appointed as Miami’s first Public Health Officer by the State’s first Health Officer, Dr. Joseph Yates Porter.

As Public Health Officer, Dr. Jackson quarantined the city during the yellow fever epidemic.  Dr. Jackson, a civic leader, helped open Miami City Hospital in 1918.  The hospital was later renamed Jackson Memorial Hospital in his honor.

Please join us for a retrospective on the role of our public health officers throughout the years and the many contributions to public health in our community.
