JACKSON’S FIRST BABY BORN IN 2012 UNDERGOES SURGERY TO CORRECT BIRTH DEFECT

The baby, born with a cleft lip/ palate, came into world after her mother went through a dramatic ordeal

Who:

Three month-old Kimberly Suarez; her mother Ana Johana Irias; UM/Jackson plastic surgeon Seth Thaller, M.D., D.M.D., FACS, FAAP

What:

Jackson Health System’s first baby born in 2012, Kimberly Amparo Suarez, underwent her first round of surgery to correct a cleft palate at Holtz Children’s Hospital this month. The little girl was born at 12:15 a.m., on January 1, after her mother, Ana Johana Irias, went into labor following a traumatic ordeal on New Year’s Eve.

On December 31, 2011, a young man on a bicycle snatched Irias’ gold necklace as she waited to use an ATM in Miami. Irias chased the robber, but lost him after he jumped over a fence. While reporting the crime to police, she began having labor pains. Fire rescue rushed Irias to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where she delivered a 6 pound, 6 ounce baby girl. The baby, who was due on January 19, arrived three weeks early. Kimberly was born with a cleft palate, which was detected by medical staff performing an ultrasound in the Jackson emergency room.

After the robbery and the unexpected birth, the family’s drama continued. As Irias recovered in the hospital, her husband returned to their apartment and discovered that it had been ransacked and burglarized. Thieves stole Christmas presents belonging to their two other young children, electronics and Irias’ purse, which contained the family’s rent money.

On April 5, Seth Thaller, M.D., D.M.D., FACS, FAAP, a University of Miami/Jackson plastic surgeon, performed the first round surgery to correct Kimberly’s cleft palate. A cleft palate is caused by abnormal facial development that affects the lip and palate. Approximately, 1 in 700 children are born with a cleft lip and/or a cleft palate in the United States. The Cleft and Craniofacial Center at the UM/Jackson Memorial Medical Center, is home to a team of highly qualified healthcare professionals who provide up-to-date clinical care, conduct cutting-edge research related to cleft lip, cleft palate and other craniofacial differences.
