New Hispanic Kidney Transplant Clinic Opens at the UM/Jackson Miami Transplant Institute

UM/Jackson Miami Transplant Institute Hispanic Living-Donor Kidney Transplant Team: Giselle Guerra, MD, medical director, Living Donor Program; Gaetano Ciancio, M.D., M.B.A., medical director, Miami Transplant Institute; Adela Mattiazzi, M.D., transplant nephrologist; and Yvette Torres, L.P.N., pre-transplant nurse coordinator

The Miami Transplant Institute at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center is opening a Hispanic Kidney Transplant Clinic for pre-kidney transplant patients of Hispanic background.  The clinic is designed to comfort the cultural fears associated with Hispanics and living donation.

Historically, the Hispanic population has had a lower than average participation in living organ donation.  By providing Hispanics with the facts about donation, the Miami Transplant Institute hopes that more of this population will come forward to help their family member or friend directly. This will also indirectly benefit over 115,000 patients in the United States on the deceased donor waiting list. Live donation has the additional benefit of possibly lasting up to twice as long as a deceased donor transplant due to the shortened time for removal of the donor kidney (nephrectomy) to transplantation in the recipient. Expanding the live donation of kidneys is a key initiative of the Miami Transplant Institute.
