|
| Why: |
Dr. Quintero is a pioneer in the field of fetal medicine, treating birth defects in utero via a minimally-invasive approach – by personally designing surgical instruments and techniques. This event raises awareness about current treatment options for life-threatening fetal conditions.
One of the babies whose life was saved by Drs. Quintero and Kontopoulos is Leyna Gonzalez. While in her mother’s womb, Leyna, 2, had an oral teratoma, a large, life-threatening tumor growing from her mouth. Drs. Quintero and Kontopoulos operated on Leyna in utero, resecting the tumor and saving her life. This was the first case of its kind in the world. Leyna and her family will attend Fetal Reunion 2012.
