FORMER JACKSON PATIENT WHO SURVIVED 2010 HAITI EARTHQUAKE RETURNS TO HOSPITAL FOR MUSICAL PERFORMANCE

On January 15, 2010, Romel Joseph arrived at Jackson Memorial Hospital after being severely injured in the devastating Haiti earthquake. For more than 18 hours, Joseph was trapped under the rubble of his music school before being rescued. His pregnant wife died that day when the New Victorian School in Port-au-Prince collapsed.
With both legs and an arm broken in the earthquake, Romel Joseph spent three months at Jackson, where he underwent several surgeries and intense rehabilitation. During his recovery, Romel received a special gift from musical legend Stevie Wonder, who had one of his personal keyboards delivered to Joseph’s hospital room.
Romel, a blind, Julliard graduate who trained with the Boston Symphony, has always been passionate about teaching children to play the violin. Since the earthquake, he has rebuilt the New Victorian School and is currently raising money to build Haiti’s first performing arts center.
On January 11, 2013 – one day before the third anniversary of the earthquake – Romel Joseph, 53, will return to Jackson Memorial to perform. He will be accompanied by his daughter, Victoria, 25, a University of Miami graduate in music performance who plays the viola, and his son, Bradley, 20, a pianist who is studying economics and piano at Florida International University. The trio will perform a concert as a way of thanking Jackson for saving Romel’s life.
Jackson Health System treated 205 Haiti earthquake survivors in 2010, all of whom survived. Many of our medical professionals – physicians, nurses and physical therapists – were among the first responders on the ground in Haiti after the earthquake.
