QUADRIPLEGIC ARTIST TEACHES DISABLED PATIENTS HOW TO PAINT AND TRANSFORM THEIR LIVES THROUGH ART AT JACKSON REHABILITATION HOSPITAL

Who:
David McCauley, quadriplegic artist; disabled patients at Jackson Rehabilitation Hospital; and Cathy Herring, rehabilitation coordinator at Jackson Rehabilitation Hospital.
What:
Four years ago, David McCauley was a successful businessman in New Jersey. It only took a moment for his life to change forever when he broke his neck in a diving accident. But David, 36, has turned what most would consider a tragedy into triumph. He relocated to Miami Beach and started painting. He now owns an art gallery in Wynwood where he paints and features art by disabled patients.
David wants other patients with similar injuries to live out their dreams. He is holding an art workshop for quadriplegic and other disabled patients at Jackson Rehabilitation Hospital, and will assist them in creating art that he can display in his gallery.
“I know first-hand what they are going through, and I want them to know there is light at the end of the tunnel,” says McCauley.
“When our patients see someone who’s in the same situation who’s living their life to the fullest, it helps our patients realize they can do the same thing, and encourages them to work harder to rehabilitate,” says Cathy Herring, Rehabilitation Coordinator at Jackson Rehabilitation Hospital.
