AT DEATH’S DOORSTEP A LIFE-SAVING PROCEDURE AT JACKSON’S STROKE CENTER BRINGS WOMAN BACK FROM THE EDGE
Paralyzed and Aware That She Was Dying, Woman Recovers Within Minutes

It was Tuesday, April 9. 29 year old Jackie Sansone thought she was going to die. She was indeed having a stroke as her car crashed into the security gate at her apartment. “I was on my way back to work from a lunch break, when all of a sudden, I felt lightheaded, and my body stopped acting normal.”
Sansone was airlifted to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital, home of the Comprehensive Stroke Center.
“She was locked in, meaning she was wide awake, but completely paralyzed,” says Dr. Ali Aziz-Sultan, chief of Neuroendovascular Surgery, University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center. “Her physical body had stopped functioning; only her brain was working. The next step was brain death.”
UM/Jackson doctors worked quickly and performed a thrombectomy, a life-saving procedure removing a clot from the back of her neck. Within 15 minutes, she was brought back to near normal, talking and moving. “It’s because of my doctors quick thinking and action that I’m alive today, says Sansone.
“There are very few things in medicine that have had such a dramatic, sudden recovery from a horrendous prognosis,” says Dr. Sultan. “She literally went from almost brain dead, to perfect shortly after the procedure.”
The young, single mother of a three year old is still recuperating at Jackson, but wants to tell her story.
