Lais Souza, a Brazilian Olympic gymnast-turned-skier, hoped to compete in her first Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. But while on the slopes in Utah on January 28, she crashed and suffered severe trauma to her spine. Souza, 25, cannot move her arms or legs and is using a ventilator to breathe.
She was treated in the intensive care unit at the University of Utah Hospital, before being moved to Jackson Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, February 5. University of Miami/Jackson trauma surgeon Antonio Marttos is Team Brazil’s doctor and has been involved in her care since the accident, traveling to Salt Lake City to assist in her care and via telemedicine from Ryder Trauma Center. Dr. Marttos made arrangements to have Souza transferred to Miami so she can be treated by world-renowned UM/Jackson neurosurgeon Barth Green, M.D., who co-founded The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis at the University of Miami.
Souza competed on Brazil’s gymnastics team in the 2004 and 2008 Summer Olympics. A hand injury prohibited her from competing in the 2012 summer games in London. Last year, she took up the sport of freestyle skiing, hoping to become Team Brazil’s first freestyle skier in the Winter Games.
