Teenage patients from Holtz Children’s Hospital at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center will enjoy a break from being poked and prodded during the “Miracle in the Garden” prom Friday night.
The event – the first of its kind at Holtz Children’s – is being organized by Taylor Sennett, a sophomore at Miami Country Day School, and Kim Juanico, R.N., B.S.N., C.H.P.P.N., a nurse in the pediatric intensive care unit at Holtz Children’s. Kim ispresident of People In Crisis United, a non-profit organization that is dedicated to improving the quality of life for patients and their families at our children’s hospital.
Teen girls and boys were invited to choose their prom attire from dozens of donated dresses and suits. Stylists from Beauty Schools of America will offer the girls the opportunity to have their hair and makeup professionally done at Jackson Memorial Hospital before the prom..
Each young patient and their guest will experience everything a normal high school prom has to offer – dancing, food, photos and more.
“Many teen patients at Holtz missed their own high school proms because they were hospitalized,” said Juanico, one of the event’s organizers. “We want to give them a night they will always remember – and a chance to feel like a teenager and not a patient.”
Those who will attend the prom have suffered from varying medical conditions, including cancer, neurological disorders, traumas and transplants, and some are terminally ill.
Among those scheduled to attend is Aaron Willis, a 16-year-old who was left paralyzed after being shot in the back while riding bike in Wynwood in December 2012.
