For as long as he can remember, 16-year-old Javaris Cox has been singing. Music and song, he says, have gotten him through good times and bad. In 2010, Javaris was diagnosed with a brain tumor. He underwent treatment at Holtz Children’s Hospital at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center and went into remission for two years.
In May 2014, during a routine follow-up, doctors discovered that Javaris’ cancer had returned. Since then, he has been in and out of Holtz Children’s. He is currently undergoing chemotherapy and awaiting a possible stem cell transplant.
Javaris, an incoming freshman at Blanche Ely High in Pompano Beach, dreams of becoming a professional singer. He breaks out in song everywhere he goes – home, school, church, and the hospital.
“Singing just makes me feel better,” Javaris said. “It makes me feel like an angel.”
On Friday, Javaris will perform a concert for the medical team at Holtz Children’s. He will sing a few of his favorite songs to an audience of doctors, nurses, therapists and Child Life specialists who have become part of his family over the past few years. His grandmother and guardian, Bernice Harris, will also be there to cheer him on.
