STROKE PATIENT CREDITS JACKSON WITH SAVING HER LIFE

Who:

Rosalinda Molina, Jackson Memorial Hospital stroke patient; Samy Elhammady, M.D., UM/Jackson neurosurgeon; Alejandro Forteza, M.D., Jackson neurologist.

What:

In October, 2013 Rosalinda Molina was driving a truckload of plants to the Homestead nursery where she works when her vehicle slammed into a tractor trailer.

Molina, 42, blacked out. She remembers waking up in a helicopter and being airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital. There, doctors determined she had suffered a stroke, the second one in a year.

“When I suffered my first stroke, I don’t think I was treated properly,” Molina said of remembering her first visit to another hospital. “But this time at Jackson, doctors discovered what was at the root of my problem.  They saved my life.”

Molina had an ischemic stroke, which occurs when an artery in the brain becomes clogged.  By performing an innovative, minimally invasive procedure, doctors were able to reverse the paralysis on Molina’s left side. Within two weeks, she was walking and talking as usual. She has since recovered and is grateful that she’s having hardly any side effects from the stroke.

Molina will share her story with the media. Her physicians, Samy Elhammady, M.D., and Alejandro Forteza, M.D., will discuss the life-saving procedure performed on Molina. They will also discuss the warning signs of stroke, the importance of early diagnosis and intervention, and offer tips on how to prevent these brain attacks.
