Donate Life Month: Samantha Murphy

When Samantha Murphy was 27 years old, her life was tragically ended due to gun violence. Her family made the decision to donate her organs. This is Samantha’s story:

Samantha murphy was my first born child. She was very adventurous and lively and was a very happy child and grew up to be the same as an adult. She was just starting to live her life and raise her baby, when her life tragically ended at age 27 due to gun violence. Other than her infectious laugh and endless smile, what I remember most about her was that how generous and loving she was.

The decision to donate was not a difficult one for me as her mother. I work as a clinical social worker at Jackson and know how important it is to give back to those who need. It was something I knew had to be done from the time I learned of the extent of my Samantha’s injuries. She would have wanted to donate and would have chosen to do the selfless act of helping others benefit from what she could not. Because of her selfless choice, she was able to donate more than five major organs and save many, many lives.

Although her loss is something that we as a family grieve every day, knowing that her heart and other organs live on, and that they were used to help others maintain a healthy life makes it worth it. She will always be in our hearts.
