An Unforgettable Prom Carnival 2016

Prom night is a night to remember in every teenager’s life, but for a group of Holtz Children’s Hospital patients, it’s a nice break from being poked and prodded and the chance to feel like a teenager, not a patient.

On April 22nd, “Prom Carnival 2016” gave each young patient and their guest the opportunity to experience everything a normal high school prom has to offer – dancing, food, photos and more.

The third annual event at Holtz Children’s was organized by Taylor Sennett, a senior at Miami Country Day School, and Kim Juanico, RN, BSN, CHPPN, pediatric palliative care nurse coordinator at Holtz Children’s. Kim is also the founder of People In Crisis United, a non-profit organization that is dedicated to improving the quality of life for patients and their families at our children’s hospital.

“Many teen patients at Holtz Children’s missed their own high school proms because they were hospitalized,” said Juanico, one of the event’s organizers. “We want to give them a night they will always remember.”

Teen girls and boys were invited to choose their prom attire from hundreds dresses, suits, shoes, and accessories donated by Jackson Health System employees.

Stylists from Beauty Schools of America offered the girls the opportunity to have their hair and makeup professionally done before the prom. Barbers from New Era Barber Shop donated their time and gave fresh haircuts to all of the boys. Thanks to the support of donors and volunteers, these patients were able to look their very best while attending prom.

Patients who attend the prom have suffered from varying medical conditions, including cancer, neurological disorders, traumas and transplants, but for one night, their focus was to have the time of their life.
