Miami’s finest chefs joined together for a night of charity in support of the American Liver Foundation (ALF). Presented by the Miami Transplant Institute, the second annual Flavors of Miami event took place at the luxurious Loews Miami Beach Hotel early September. This culinary experience showcased a cocktail reception, a silent auction, and a five-course dinner for patrons.
This year’s honoree was Christopher B. O’ Brien, MD, AGAF, FRCMI, medical director of liver, intestinal and multivisceral transplant at the Miami Transplant Institute—a unique affiliation between Jackson Health System and UHealth – the University of Miami Health System.
Dr. O’ Brien thanked the audience for the recognition, and spoke about his experiences as a physician and his current investigative treatments for chronic liver disease.
“I feel privileged to have been a part of the progress in treatment and, in many cases, the cures for liver diseases that has taken place over the past 30 years, said Dr. O’ Brien. “I share this Flavors of Miami tribute with my esteemed colleagues because working in liver disease and the transplant world is clearly a team effort.”
ALF’s mission has served the needs of liver patients and their families throughout the nation for 40 years, and in the last year, ALF began expansion efforts in the southeast region of the country by partnering with Jackson Health System. Flavors of Miami raised $155,000 this year – money that will be used for medical research and advocacy initiatives.
“We have partnered with Jackson for our Flavors of Miami for the second year and plan on hosting our first educational program for the community of Miami this fall,” said National Board Chair and CEO of ALF, Tom Nealon. “We are dedicated to the fight against liver disease and want to offer additional programs for this community in early 2017.”
ALF is hosting an educational program, “Ask the Experts” on November 9, featuring Jackson Health System experts who will address topics related to liver disease. This patient education program is for people with liver disease, healthcare professionals and caregivers to have an open discussion with the experts on liver disease.
