Miami-Dade’s First New Year’s Baby Delivered at Jackson South Medical Center
On December 31, 2016, Standrika Wooden, 30, went to Jackson South Medical Center for a regular prenatal visit when her baby decided she was ready to come into this world.
Nishon’te King was born at 12:32 a.m. on January 1, 2017. She is believed to be the first baby born in Miami-Dade County in 2017.
“She wasn’t a planned baby, but thank God she’s here,” Wooden said of Nishon’te, who weighed 5 pounds, 14 ounces at birth. “She is healthy and I feel so blessed.”
The birth soon after the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Day made for an unforgettable moment for the obstetrics and gynecology team at Jackson South, said Jamell Walker, MD, who delivered the baby.
“We make miracles daily,” said Dr. Walker. “This one is a particular happiness and joy for me because she’s my first New Year’s baby.”
Wooden is thankful for the care she received by the labor and delivery team at Jackson South, including her nurses Pauline Brown-Carey and Teresa Hoover.
“It feels wonderful,” said Wooden. “My baby took me through a lot of pain but thank God she is here. She is my New Year’s baby.”
Nishon’te is the sixth child for Wooden and her husband Nishon King. She is home, being loved by her three brothers and two sisters.
