Jackson Celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. Day
On the third Monday of January every year, Miami joins in this federal holiday to commemorate Martin Luther King’s peaceful activism in the civil rights movement. This year Jackson joined in on many of the celebrations throughout Miami-Dade. From parades to wellness events, Jackson was front and center.
We began with a Bridging the Gap MLK Day Health and Wellness Fair at Betty T. Ferguson Recreational Complex. Event goers stopped by the Jackson’s booth to learn about the importance of exercising, received free jump ropes, and had the opportunity to participate in a jump rope competition.
The West Perrine Marching Band Extravaganza is also a very well-known event throughout our community during MLK weekend. Jackson branded selfie-sticks were distributed to help families capture those “selfie” moments with the amazing marching bands performing.
The West Perrine MLK Parade has become a popular event in the South-Dade community and featured dignitaries, decorative floats, area businesses, and electrifying performances. Loud cheers were heard as Jackson’s ambulances passed everyone by.
The celebrations culminated with the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Parade in Liberty City. Jackson’s Public Health Trust Board Member, Dr. Rev. Walter Richardson rode in the parade along with the high school marching bands, athletes, cheerleaders, and Jackson’s ambulances.
