Women’s Health: Establishing Healthy Foundations
For many women, their 20s is a period of time marked by many life-changing milestones, like college graduation, launching a career, and even settling down and getting married.
As you navigate through these major life events, it’s important to remain focused on managing your health. Take time to talk with your healthcare provider to make sure you are up-to-date on recommended health screenings and vaccines.
Below are some guidelines for women ages 18 to 29.
HEALTH RISKS TO BE AWARE OF
- Melanoma
Sunlight, the main source of UV rays, is a major risk factor for melanomas (and other skin cancers). Some research suggests that having many sunburns, especially in childhood, might increase the risk of getting melanoma. If you are spending time outside, make sure to regularly apply sunscreen. - Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)
While some STDs can spread through body fluids, others can spread through contact with affected skin. There are many tips that you can use to prevent STDs, from limiting your sexual partners to always using protection. However you choose to protect yourself, it is important to stay informed and have open communication with your partners and healthcare providers. - High Cholesterol
There are many ways you can take control over your cholesterol. From cutting back on saturated fats, to increasing your servings of foods like fish and whole grains, and taking part in regular physical activity.
