Men’s Health: Strengthening Your Health

Male illustration for staying fit in your 40s

Your 40s are a time to build strength and stamina. Every part of your body can change, from your appearance, to the health of your heart and bones.

Some men start losing muscle mass, but strength training can help. Adding weight training to your workouts can also strengthen your bones and lower your risk of osteoporosis. Preventing osteoporosis is important to maintain the quality and quantity of your bones over time and to prevent fractures.

Limiting your alcohol intake can help too. Recent studies show that drinking alcohol daily may increase the risk for liver cancer, colorectal cancer, and other types of cancer. Increasing fiber in your diet can be a smart move. Studies suggest that fiber may help prevent colon cancer, help treat diabetes, and control high blood pressure.

HEALTH RISKS TO BE AWARE OF

  • Heart Disease
Heart disease is the leading killer of men. You can reduce your risks for stroke, atherosclerosis (fatty build up inside your blood vessels), and a heart attack through regular health checkups and lifestyle changes. You may not be able to control all your risk factors, such as a family history of heart disease. But eating healthy, exercising, and managing stress can help.
  • Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer in U.S. men and the second deadliest, after lung cancer. If caught early, it can be cured. Often there are no symptoms early on, so regular screening is recommended. Your doctor may recommend a digital rectal exam or a test to measure your prostate specific antigen levels in your blood.

Take time to talk with your healthcare provider to make sure you are up-to-date on recommended health screenings and vaccines.
