Hispanic Heritage Month – Elena Barberis

Growing up in Hialeah, I never had to travel far to hear a story of how Jackson Health System saved someone’s life. Whether it was a youngster who broke a bone or an elderly neighbor who fell ill, Jackson was always my Hispanic neighborhood’s first choice.  Known for its medical expertise and commitment to community, the century-old mission was – and still is – respected and valued. For that, I am profoundly proud.

Twenty years ago, women in the finance field were a rare sight – let alone a Hispanic woman.  So rare that I often found myself isolated, having to work twice as hard to prove myself. However, I can tell you that Jackson empowered me. It gave me the opportunity to advance my career on the merit of my work, free of bias.

As the eldest of four, my siblings and family look to me to ensure we gather as often as possible. It’s a traditional role that comes with a large family in the Hispanic community, requiring lots of patience, organizational skills, and multitasking – coincidentally all the assets required to lead a team and do my best for Jackson. I am a mother, a wife, a sister, and a proud Jackson family member.
