Rape Treatment Center Participates In Walk to End Domestic Violence

Jackson Memorial Hospital, home to the Roxcy Bolton Rape Treatment Center (RTC), raised awareness on domestic violence by participating this year in the North Miami Beach Police Department’s 10th Annual Walk to End Domestic Violence.  This event honors survivors of domestic violence and mourns those who have lost their lives because of it.

According to the National Research Center of Domestic Violence, Domestic Violence Awareness Month evolved from the “Day of Unity” in October 1981.  The intent was to connect advocates across the nation who were working to end violence against women and their children.

RTC was one of 43 community agencies who participated in the North Miami Police Department’s event. The 2-mile walk also consisted of a community resource fair, clothesline exhibit, and a tribute wall to victims of domestic violence, displayed for victims who passed away because of this type of violence. Their memories and stories were told through an empty seat at the table display, casket display, and a field of flowers. Informational packets that included statistics about domestic violence were also available for attendees – stating that every six hours a women is murdered in an act of domestic violence in the United States.

“ I really enjoyed seeing the community come together and bring awareness to the impact that domestic violence has on so many families,” said Daria Jackson, a victim advocate at the RTC. “It was important that I walk in honor of those who have experienced domestic violence. Remember love doesn’t hurt.”
