What Are Uterine Fibroids?

Uterine fibroids are noncancerous growths that develop in and around the uterus that often appear during years when women can get pregnant and give birth. How Common Are They?

Fibroids are incredibly common, affecting up to 80 percent of women by age 50. They’re especially prevalent among Black women, who tend to develop them earlier, experience more severe symptoms, and have a higher risk of recurrence.

Signs and Symptoms

Many fibroids cause no symptoms at all, but when they do, they can lead to:

• Heavy or extended menstrual bleeding
• Pelvic pain or pressure
• Bloating or abdominal enlargement
• Frequent urination or constipation
• Pain during intercourse

If left untreated, fibroids can lead to anemia from blood loss, fertility issues, and reduced quality of life.

Treatment Options

Treatment depends on symptoms, fibroid size, the location of the fibroids, and future pregnancy plans. Options include:

• Medication – Hormonal therapy, birth control, and certain non-hormonal drugs can help manage symptoms.
• Minimally invasive procedures – Uterine artery embolization, which blocks blood flow to the fibroids, and MRI-guided focused ultrasound can shrink or destroy fibroids without major surgery.
• Surgery – A myomectomy removes fibroids while preserving the uterus. A hysterectomy (removing the uterus) is the only permanent cure.

Some women choose to wait if symptoms are mild, as fibroids often shrink after menopause.
