Acne Treatments Recalled for Benzene Contamination: What You Need to Know
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a voluntary recall of several popular acne treatments due to high levels of benzene; a chemical known to cause cancer. Some of the products listed as having possible benzene contamination include:
- La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo Dual Action Acne Treatment
- Walgreens Acne Control Cleanser
- Proactiv Skin Smoothing Exfoliator
- SLMD Benzoyl Peroxide Acne Lotion
- Walgreens Tinted Acne Treatment Cream
- Zapzyt Acne Treatment Gel
- Proactive Emergency Blemish Relief Cream
Benzene exposure has been linked to cancers like leukemia and other blood cell cancers. Its impact depends on the amount used, how the user was exposed, and for how long. Age and preexisting medical conditions also play a part in how benzene affects the body. In small amounts over long periods of time, it can slow down the development of new blood cells. Long-term exposure through breathing in the chemical, taking it orally, and absorbing it through the skin may result in cancer.
Even though benzene is a known carcinogen, the FDA emphasizes the risk of developing cancer from these products is very low. Stores are removing these items from shelves, but consumers don’t have to stop using their products.
They should, however, check expiration dates and throw away anything that’s expired.
