ADHD Symptoms in Children

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is becoming a big concern for parents in the U.S. While common, the neurodevelopmental disorder is affecting a growing number of children across the country. ADHD is characterized by a combination of persistent issues, such as difficulty paying attention, hyperactivity, and impulsive behavior. Along with impacting social relationships, it can significantly affect kids’ school and work performance.

Those with ADHD typically experience the following types of symptoms:

Inattention

  • Difficulty paying attention to details, listening, or following instructions.
  • Easily distracted, forgetful, procrastinate, don’t finish homework or chores, and daydream.

Hyperactivity

  • Unable to sit still, especially in calm or quiet settings.
  • Constantly fidgeting, squirming, or tapping hands or feet.
  • Excessive physical movement, such as running around or climbing, and trouble playing quietly.

Impulsivity

  • Difficulty waiting their turn, acting without thinking, or interrupting conversations.
  • Blurting out answers or intruding on others’ activities.

Other lesser-known signs of ADHD are frequent mood swings, trouble coping with stress, and having a hot temper.

Parents, if you notice your child consistently showing a combination of these signs, speak with your pediatrician or family healthcare provider. You can also click here for more information on the resources available at Jackson Behavioral Health Hospital.
