Alexander Zverev Used a Smartphone During Wimbledon Matches. Here’s why.

Tennis star Alexander Zverev was seen using his smartphone during his matches at Wimbledon 2026, although phone usage is typically banned for players. As a person with type 1 diabetes, it’s important for Zverev to monitor his blood sugar levels.

Existing technology allows diabetes patients to track their levels on their mobile devices. As a result, Zverev got a medical accommodation that allowed him to use his smartphone at Wimbledon.

What’s Diabetes?

Diabetes is a condition that causes your blood sugar (also known as glucose) to be too high. This happens when your body doesn’t make enough insulin or doesn’t use it properly.

Diabetes can affect people at any age. There are three types:

  • Type 1: Your body makes little or no insulin.
  • Type 2: Your body doesn’t use insulin well or doesn’t make enough of it.
  • Gestational: This type develops during pregnancy and usually goes away after birth.

If left untreated, diabetes can quickly become life-threatening or lead to long-term complications. It’s important to know the symptoms, which include:

  • Feeling very thirsty
  • Dry mouth
  • Frequent urination
  • Blurred vision
  • Feeling tired or low energy
  • Cuts or sores that heal slowly

If you or a loved one are experiencing these symptoms, talk to a doctor right away.

How’s it Treated?

Doctors can diagnose a patient with diabetes through a blood test. There are several aspects to treating the condition if you’re diagnosed, including:

  • Blood sugar monitoring
  • Medications
  • Diet
  • Exercise

In publicly addressing his type 1 diabetes, Alexander Zverev has shown that with proper diagnosis and treatment, the condition can often be managed. He also continues to raise awareness about the available technologies and accommodations that can be pursued in support of medical treatment.
