When actress Anne Hathaway recently announced her pregnancy at 43, it sparked conversations about pregnancy later in life. While fertility naturally declines with age, many women are having healthy pregnancies and babies in their 40s thanks to advances in medical care, fertility treatments, and a greater understanding of maternal health.

In fact, more women are choosing to start or grow their families as they get older. Although there are more things to consider with pregnancy after 40it’s possible to have a safe and healthy experience with proper planning and prenatal care.

Understanding Fertility After 40

A woman’s fertility slowly decreases with age, particularly after 35. By 40, the number and quality of eggs naturally decline, which can make it more difficult to get pregnant. Some women become pregnant naturally, while others may need help through fertility treatments such as in vitro fertilization (IVF).

If you’re 40 or older and considering pregnancy, it’s important to speak with your doctor or a fertility specialist early. They can evaluate your reproductive health, discuss your options, and help create a plan that supports your family-building goals.

Potential Risks and Considerations

Pregnancy later in life is often referred to as an “advanced maternal age” pregnancy. While many women have healthy experiences, there can be an increased risk of certain complications, including:

  • Gestational diabetes
  • High blood pressure or preeclampsia
  • Changes in chromosomes
  • Preterm birth
  • Cesarean delivery

The good news is that today’s prenatal screening tools and monitoring techniques allow healthcare teams to identify and manage many of these risks early.

Steps to Support a Healthy Pregnancy

If you’re planning a pregnancy after 40, there are several ways to support your health and your baby’s development:

  • Schedule a pre-pregnancy checkup with your doctor.
  • Start taking a prenatal vitamin with folic acid.
  • Maintain a healthy weight through a balanced diet and regular exercise.
  • Avoid smoking, excessive alcohol use, and other harmful substances.
  • Manage chronic conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or thyroid disorders.
  • Attend all prenatal appointments and recommended screenings.

Regular prenatal care plays a big role in monitoring both mom and baby throughout pregnancy.

It’s Never Too Late to Start the Conversation

While pregnancy after 40 may look different from pregnancy in your 20s or 30s, age alone doesn’t determine your ability to have a healthy pregnancy. Every woman is unique, and advances in maternal-fetal medicine have made it possible for many women to safely welcome children later in life.

If you’re considering pregnancy or have questions about your reproductive health, talk with your doctor. Early planning, personalized care, and ongoing support can help you navigate your journey with confidence.
