Actor Anne Hathaway is one of the millions of people worldwide affected by cataracts. She shared in an interview that she lived with poor vision for nearly a decade, unable to fully see from her left eye, before learning she had an early-onset cataract.

While cataracts are often associated with aging and typically develop after 40, they can happen earlier in life.

What are Cataracts and Why do they Develop?

A cataract can develop when the eye’s natural lens becomes cloudy, causing blurred vision and making it harder to see clearly. Although age is the most common risk factor, cataracts can also be caused by genetics, certain medical conditions, and environmental factors.

One of the most important advances in cataract care is recognizing that earlier diagnosis and treatment can help preserve quality of life. Waiting for cataracts to get worse before considering surgery isn’t necessary. Today, eye care specialists generally recommend looking into treatment options as soon as cataracts begin affecting vision and everyday activities, rather than waiting for severe vision loss to happen.

Common symptoms of cataracts include:

  • Difficulty seeing in dim lighting
  • Fuzzy vision
  • Light sensitivity
  • Poor night vision
  • Seeing washed-out colors

Why Treatment Matters

Left untreated, cataracts can get worse over time and significantly affect daily life. Poor vision may increase the risk of falls, motor vehicle accidents, and difficulty performing routine tasks. In severe cases, cataracts can lead to major vision loss.

Regular eye exams remain one of the best ways to detect cataracts and other eye conditions early. Even if your vision seems normal, routine screenings can help identify changes before they become a problem. If you notice changes in your vision, speak with a professional.
