Apple’s New Watch and AirPod Wellness Features – Great Advancements for Health Monitoring

Apple recently announced several new features on the Apple Watch and AirPods that relate to tracking heart health, alerting users to possible problems and providing them with wellness insights.

The newest features on the Apple Watch Series 11 include:

• Hypertension notifications: Alerts users to signs of chronic high blood pressure. While not a complete diagnosis, it can analyze changes in the user’s blood vessles over a 30-day period using optical heart sensors.
• AFib history: Estimates the percentage of time your heart shows signs of atrial fibrillation (AFib), a common heart rhythm disorder where the upper chambers of the heart (atria) beat irregularly and rapidly. This should be used by those who are 22 and older who have already been diagnosed with AFib by a doctor. This feature provides helpful data for those patients to share with their caregivers.
• Irregular rhythm notifications: This feature is designed to help users who haven’t been diagnosed with AFib because it occasionally checks for an irregular heart rhythm.
• ECG app: This app allows users to get a reading of their heart rhythm through the use of a single-lead electrocardiogram (ECG).

The newest wellness features on the AirPods Pro 3 include:

• Heart rate monitoring: This new feature tracks your pulse during workouts, and syncs data with the Health and Fitness apps on your Apple devices .

While all of these features show real progress in the wellness space, it’s important to keep in mind that they should ultimately be used for monitoring and data collection.
