Celebrating Nurses Week: How Nurses Can Prioritize Mental Health and Prevent Burnout

As we celebrate Nurses Week and recognize Mental Health Awareness Month, it’s a good time to highlight an issue that impacts many in health care: burnout. Nurses are the heart of many healthcare organizations — they’re compassionate, dedicated, and always going the extra mile to care for others.

The emotional and physical demands that come with being a nurse make it essential that we support our nurses not just professionally, but personally.

What does nurse burnout look like?

Burnout is more than just being tired. It means feeling stressed or worn out. Nurses who feel burned out may:

  • Feel emotionally drained
  • Be less excited about their work
  • Have trouble sleeping or focusing
  • Be more worried or sad than usual

Burnout can hurt your health. That’s why it’s important to take care of yourself, too.

Five Ways Nurses Can Protect Their Mental Health

  1. Create recovery time between shifts
We know nursing isn’t a 9-to-5 job, and stepping up during critical times is part of what makes nurses so incredible. That said, wherever possible, finding ways to rest and recharge between shifts is crucial. Whether it’s a short walk, a nap, or time with loved ones, recovery is not a luxury; it’s a necessity for long-term sustainability.
  2. Build small self-care rituals
Even in a busy schedule, small moments of self-care can go a long way. A morning coffee enjoyed in silence, a few minutes of deep breathing before a shift, or a favorite podcast during your commute – these simple rituals help create balance and reduce stress.
  3. Lean on each other
Nurses understand each other in a way few others can. Building and nurturing peer support through team check-ins, casual conversations, or mentorship can help combat feelings of isolation and reinforce a sense of community and shared purpose.
  4. Seek professional support when needed
Mental health support should never be out of reach. At Jackson Health System, we provide our nursing teams with access to free and affordable mental health resources that allow staff to engage with wellness tools anytime, anywhere. We understand the challenges our nurses face and do our best to help.
  5. Encourage a culture of wellness
True well-being isn’t just an individual responsibility, it’s an organizational priority. Nurses can play a powerful role in shaping a culture that values mental health. That means speaking up about stress, advocating for wellness resources, and helping reduce the stigma around asking for help.
