Channing Tatum’s Shoulder Injury: What It Is, What Surgery Looks Like, and the Recovery Process
Actor Channing Tatum recently announced that he underwent surgery for a separated shoulder, sharing photos and X-rays on social media that showed the joint before and after a large screw was placed to stabilize the bones.
Shoulder injuries like this are common among people who perform physical activities, from weekend workouts to stunt work. They can affect anyone, not just professional athletes and performers.
What Type of Shoulder Injury Is This?
A separated shoulder occurs when the ligaments that hold the collarbone, or clavicle, to the shoulder blade, or scapula, are damaged, causing the bones to shift out of alignment. This type of injury is often caused by a fall or direct impact to the shoulder. A shoulder separation is different from a shoulder dislocation, which involves the ball of the upper arm bone coming out of its socket.
“In a shoulder separation, the ligaments that stabilize the joint are stretched or torn,” said Alejandro Posada, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at Jackson Health System. “When pain or instability does not improve with conservative treatment, surgery may be necessary.”
What Does Shoulder Surgery Involve?
Surgery for a severe shoulder separation typically focuses on repairing torn ligaments and restoring stability to the joint. In some cases, this includes using screws or plates to hold the bones in proper alignment while healing occurs.
After surgery, patients usually wear a sling for several weeks to protect the shoulder and allow healing to begin.
Rehabilitation and Recovery
Rehabilitation therapy is a critical part of recovery following shoulder surgery. Both physical and occupational therapy may be part of a patient’s care plan, depending on individual needs and goals.
“Surgery restores stability, but therapy restores movement, strength, and functional use of the arm needed for daily independence,” said Delia Hernandez-Rivero, an occupational therapist at Jackson Health System. “The focus is helping patients safely return to everyday activities, work, and recreation.”
Recovery typically progresses in phases:
- Early rehabilitation focuses on pain control and gentle range-of-motion exercises.
- Strengthening exercises are gradually introduced to rebuild muscle support.
- Later therapy emphasizes functional movement based on a patient’s lifestyle or activity level.
“Recovery timelines vary, but many patients participate in structured rehabilitation for three to six months,” Hernandez-Rivero said. “Consistency and patience are key.”
The Takeaway
High-profile injuries like Tatum’s bring attention to a common orthopedic issue that affects people of all ages and activity levels.
“If shoulder pain or instability is interfering with your daily life, it’s important to get it evaluated,” Dr. Posada said. “Early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent long-term problems.”
At Jackson, orthopedic surgeons and rehabilitation specialists work together to guide patients through every step of recovery.
