Cognitive Testing: What It Is and Why It Matters

In today’s fast-paced world, our mental abilities are an important aspect of performing everyday tasks. Some of these tasks are often taken for granted, and include things like problem-solving and decision-making. How we measure our ability to perform these tasks, however, is where cognitive testing comes into play.

What is cognitive testing?

Cognitive testing checks your cognition, or your brain’s ability to process information.

Why should I get cognitive testing?

If you or your loved one are experiencing memory loss, difficulty completing tasks that are typically easy, or repeating information without realizing it, it may be time to get a cognitive test. Milder signs that show it’s time to get tested include unexplained changes in behavior or frequently misplacing things.

What do cognitive tests show and consist of?

There are a wide range of cognitive tests, from simple exams that can be done in 30 minutes at a neurologist’s office to a more sophisticated eight-hour test that’s done by a neuropsychologist. Most screenings will ask questions that include some reading and writing, and will test short-term memory. These tests can show problems with attention, concentration, language, memory, and mood. Your doctor may ask for additional information based on your test results.

Where can I get a cognitive test?

Start by talking with your primary care doctor about the symptoms you or your loved one are experiencing, and ask if a referral to a neurologist or neuropsychologist is appropriate.
