Dan Marino’s Liver Disease Diagnosis Emphasizes the Importance of Early Action
Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino revealed that he was diagnosed with a liver disease called metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), formerly known as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
Marino, now 63, said his diagnosis came nearly 20 years ago after a routine check-up. Though he felt only mild fatigue, tests showed early signs of liver disease. Since then, he has focused on lifestyle changes including daily exercise, a Mediterranean-style diet, and limiting sweets, wine, and processed foods.
MASH occurs when fat builds up in the liver, causing inflammation and scarring. If left untreated, it can progress to cirrhosis or liver failure.
Connor Wayman, MD, a transplant hepatologist at Miami Transplant Institute (MTI), said Marino’s story highlights why people shouldn’t wait for symptoms.
“Many patients with fatty liver disease feel fine in the beginning,” Dr. Wayman said. “Simple bloodwork or imaging can uncover early disease, which is when treatment works best.”
He emphasized that lifestyle changes are the cornerstone of care. “Weight loss, regular physical activity, and a healthy diet can slow or even reverse damage before it becomes advanced.”
People diagnosed with fatty liver disease or MASH should:
- See a hepatologist for evaluation and monitoring.
- Maintain a balanced diet and exercise regularly.
- Limit alcohol and added sugars.
- Track liver health with follow-up testing.
MTI, an affiliation between Jackson Health System and UHealth – University of Miami Health System, provides comprehensive care for liver conditions, from early disease management through transplantation.
By sharing his diagnosis, Marino is raising awareness about a condition that often goes unnoticed until it becomes serious. His experience shows the value of early action and consistent lifestyle changes.
