Drowning Prevention Tips – Keep Your Kids Safe Around Water this Summer

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), drowning is the leading cause of death for 1-to-4-year-olds, and can happen within seconds. You can prevent drowning from happening by following these safety tips this summer.

1. Pool gates and barriers

It’s important to watch kids while in the pool, and just as important to keep them out when there’s no one around. An easy way to do this is a secure gate that is at least 4 feet tall, to make sure children don’t accidentally fall or get into the water. A lot of drowning-related deaths happen outside of “swim time” because kids have easy access to unattended pools. Parental supervision is necessary around all forms of water including bathtubs, toilets, pools, spas, or other open water. Touch supervision states that parents must be within arm’s reach of the children in the water.

2. Swim lessons

The CDC says that 15 percent of American adults don’t know how to swim for a variety of reasons, including limited access to swim lessons. There are many free or discounted programs available, including through the American Red Cross, where both you and your child can take lessons together.

3. Safe swim gear

The color of your child’s swimsuit can make a huge difference in seeing them while they’re in the water. Consider choosing brighter colors, and avoid blue or neutral suits. Wearing approved life jackets in open waters or while boating is also required for children under 13.

4. Emergency preparedness

Two simple ways to be prepared for a water emergency is by having CPR training, and having a charged phone on hand to call for help. CPR can save a life in a drowning emergency; the American Red Cross and other local organizations provide training regularly. When at the beach, educate yourself on what the different flag colors mean. You can also ask the on-duty lifeguards what the flags are for and if it’s safe for your child to swim.
