FDA Approves First Ever Nasal Spray for Life-Threatening Allergic Reactions

Neffy, a nasal spray that treats anaphylaxis, was recently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The new treatment provides an alternative to needle-based epinephrine options, like the EpiPen, for both adults and children. The spray is expected to be available in about eight weeks.

Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening allergic reaction that requires immediate medical attention. Common symptoms include hives, swelling, itching, vomiting, and difficulty breathing. Some, especially children, wait to get treatment because they’re afraid of needles. The new Neffy spray can help alleviate that fear, getting medication to those who need it most in a faster, more convenient way.

Is Neffy effective?
Based on clinical trials, Neffy seems to be as effective as the EpiPen, but patients should still go to their nearest emergency room after receiving the medication to be monitored. Potential side effects of the spray include nasal and throat irritation, headaches, nervousness, runny nose, and stomach pain. To use Neffy, you must weigh at least 66 pounds. Those with certain nasal conditions or other medical complications and allergic reactions associated with sulfite should speak to their doctor before using Neffy.
