FDA Warns Consumers Not to Eat Certain Frozen Shrimp Sold at Walmart: Here’s What You Need to Know

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recalled certain frozen raw shrimp imported from PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati (BMS Foods), a company in Indonesia.

What Products are Affected?

The shrimp was sold under the Great Value brand at Walmart stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, and West Virginia.

What’s the Concern?

FDA testing found that some shipments of BMS Foods shrimp may have been exposed to cesium-137 (Cs-137), a man-made radioactive material. While the levels detected were below the FDA’s safety limit, eating contaminated food over a long period could increase the risk of health problems, including cancer.

What Should You Do?

• If you bought one of the affected shrimp products, throw it away. Don’t eat or serve it.
• Retailers and distributors should remove these products from shelves and food service.
• If you’re concerned about possible exposure, talk with your doctor.
