Fireworks Are Fun. Burns Aren’t.

For most, the Fourth of July means backyard cookouts, time with loved ones, and ending the night with fireworks. While they’re a holiday favorite, fireworks can also lead to serious injuries in a matter of seconds.

Every year, doctors at Ryder Trauma Center treat people with firework-related injuries, many of them being preventable. Whether you’re setting off fireworks at home or watching from the sidelines, a few simple tips can help keep the celebration safe.

Don’t Underestimate Sparklers

They may seem harmless, but sparklers can reach temperatures of nearly 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. That’s hot enough to cause severe burns instantly. If children are using sparklers, an adult should always be nearby. You can also use glow sticks as a safer alternative for younger kids.

The Safest Fireworks Show Is a Professional One

If you have the chance, leave the fireworks to the professionals. If you’re doing fireworks at home, make sure you’re following these directions:

  • Light one firework at a time.
  • Keep a bucket of water, hose, or fire extinguisher close by.
  • Never hold a lit firework in your hand.
  • Never try to re-light one that doesn’t go off.

Know What to Do if Someone Gets Burned

If someone is burned, the priority is to cool the burn. Place the area under cool running water. DO NOT use ice or home remedies like butter or toothpaste, they can make the injury worse.

If the burn is deep, covers a large area, involves the face, hands, feet, or genitals, or was caused by an explosion, immediately seek medical attention.

Celebrate Smart

Most firework-related burns and injuries are preventable. Taking a few extra precautions now can help you avoid a painful injury later. If you or someone around you experiences a serious burn, don’t wait to get medical care. The sooner a burn is evaluated and treated, the better the outcome can be.

A fun and safe celebration starts with making smart choices, so you can focus on enjoying the holiday with family and friends.
