How to Spot Signs of Holiday Heart Trouble
The holidays are filled with celebration, but they can also place extra strain on the heart. Cardiologists across the country often see a rise in heart-related emergencies this time of year, driven by increased stress and anxiety, disrupted routines, heavy foods, and higher alcohol intake.
Knowing the warning signs can make a life-saving difference.
What’s “Holiday Heart”?
Holiday heart syndrome is a term used to describe a temporary irregular heartbeat that can occur during or shortly after the holidays. These episodes can affect people with or without a history of heart disease and are often triggered by overeating, increased alcohol use, dehydration, or lack of sleep.
“We frequently see patients dismiss early symptoms as holiday stress or indigestion,” said Dr. Ivan Mendoza, a cardiologist and medical director at Jackson Heart Institute. “Listening to your body and acting early is critical.”
Warning Signs to Watch For
Be alert to symptoms that may signal heart trouble, including:
- Chest pressure, tightness, or discomfort
- A racing, fluttering, or irregular heartbeat
- Shortness of breath or unusual fatigue
- Dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting
- Pain in the jaw, neck, back, or shoulders
- Nausea or a cold sweat that feels out of the ordinary
“An irregular heartbeat that lasts more than a few minutes or comes with dizziness should never be ignored,” Dr. Ivan Mendoza said.
When to Get Help
Call 911 immediately for severe chest pain, sudden shortness of breath, or fainting. If symptoms come and go, or seem mild but unusual, schedule follow-up care with a cardiologist as soon as possible.
Protecting Your Heart This Holiday Season
Small steps can help reduce risk:
- Drink alcohol moderately and stay hydrated
- Balance rich meals with lighter options
- Take medications as prescribed and maintain sleep routines
- Manage stress and pace holiday activities
“The holidays should be joyful,” Dr. Mendoza said. “Recognizing heart warning signs early helps ensure they stay that way.”
