Is Your First-Aid Kit Ready for Hurricane Season?
South Florida residents aren’t strangers to hurricanes, and that’s why it’s important to be fully prepared as we enter into the summer months, when storms are more likely to affect the region. The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season begins on June 1. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicts there will be an 85 percent chance of an above-normal season, including four to seven major hurricanes.
It’s crucial to make sure your hurricane preparedness kit is stocked with the right first-aid materials in case you and your loved ones are in a situation where you may need them. Don’t wait until a storm is announced to begin preparing. Stores tend to run out of essentials quickly when everyone decides to purchase them at the last minute.
Dr. Hany Atallah, chief medical officer at Jackson Memorial Hospital, recommends that you have the following materials in your kit:
- Bandages of different sizes
- Antibiotic ointment
- Hand sanitizer
- Gauze wrap
- Hydrogen peroxide
- Medical tape
- Scissors
- Gloves
- Tourniquet
- Flashlight
- Batteries
- Canned and non-perishable food
- Can opener
- Extra cash
- One gallon of water per person, per day
- Seven-day supply of all medications
- Formula and diapers for babies
- Blankets
- Portable battery charger for cell phones
- Disinfecting wipes to clean things
- Toilet paper
- Pet care items
Make sure to check your hurricane preparedness kit at least once a year, and make any adjustments, if necessary. It’s important that you have enough of each item, and that the materials haven’t expired.
Talk with the members of your household to create an emergency plan if a hurricane threatens your community. Preparation is key to ensure your safety, and the safety of your loved ones.
