Men’s Sexual Health Could Be Tied to Heart Health

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is being linked to early signs of heart disease among men. It may be a difficult conversation to have with a doctor, but sharing ED issues can make a difference in diagnosing and treating serious heart problems.

“If ED is happening to you already, then we’ve got to look at your heart,” said Dayron Rodriguez, MD, a urologist at Jackson West Medical Center.

The rate of ED among men with heart disease is twice as high as those without, according to the American Heart Association. Dr. Rodriguez discussed on an episode of Jackson Health System’s podcast, On Call, Off Script, that ED is more than just a lifestyle issue and could be an indicator of serious health concerns.

“I tell patients the arteries that are bringing blood supply to the penis are exactly the same size of the arteries that are bringing the blood supply to the heart,” Dr. Rodriguez said. “I tell them we’re going to focus on their ED, but they need to see a cardiologist immediately.”

Since the arteries connected to erections are small, they can show signs of potential damage or blocks related to heart issues before more obvious symptoms start. It can serve as an early warning sign.

Diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood sugar are risk factors for heart disease and closely tied to why some men experience ED. These conditions affect blood flow, blood vessels, heart function, and sexual health.

“What’s more important than saving a patient’s erections today is that they go follow up and see the cardiologist because it will probably save their life,” Dr. Rodriguez said.

Managing heart disease risk factors through healthy eating, regular exercise, and not smoking can make a major difference in men’s sexual health. It’s important to tell your doctor about erection issues because it could clue them in on a larger issue down the road.
